Fred Terzian reporting: OCD member Jim Harris with his cousin (they hadn't seen each other in over thirty years!) when he returned his grandfather Ocie Randall's Goldberg "Zipper" airplane (built during the early Fifties). Note the Fresno Gas Model Association decal on the side. Also, his cousin talking with Southern California flyer with very beautiful rendition of Carl Goldberg's "FAI Viking" design from the Late Fifties-Early Sixties.

Fred Terzian forwarded pictures from an F1E activity, taken at Lost Hills.

F1E described (from FAI web site)

Gliding down the slope – human beings had dreamed about it for almost a million of years. Aeromodellers use the lift generated by the wind uphill for hundred years now, but model aircrafts with reliable magnet steering devices for a stable free flight had first been introduced by the German Hans Gremmer in 1951. These steering systems are simple, sturdy and since 1977 the heart of the FAI Free Flight class F1E. Like other free flight classes F1E is very much popular with competitions, but the training is exiting as well, satisfying the age-old desire.

In principle, a rudder is fixed above a strong magnet which turns freely on a hub in its center. Before the glider is to be launched downhill the rudder must be adjusted. It has to show in the flight path, with the magnet pointing to the north resp. south - as it is its nature. While gliding, the model aircraft will be disturbed by turbulences of the headwinds which even try to turn it back.

On August 12, 2017 at Lakeville, there were three contests held simultaneously; A SAM 27 contest CD’d by Rod Persons, an FAC contest CD’d by Manuel Cisneros, and the OCD contest CD’d by Dick Douglas. Rod’s events were P-30 and a rubber scramble for models that would fit in a 30” circle. Manuel had Jet catapult scale, embryo endurance, and dime scale. The OCD contest had all the regular OCD events such as OCD catapult.

The day started off well with calm winds and overcast with lots of thermals. When the clouds burned off the winds stayed calm until about noon. A great day. Not as much participation as for previous contests.

    Dick Douglas

Bud Romak was at the Waegell Field, test flying his Dawn Patrol prior to the Nats. This particular model had a 30+ minute flight at Lost Hills and was located in a tree, with the help of a drone. Bud built a new wing to replace the one that was broken after that long flight, and was test flying it for the first time.

Hank Cole showed up at our OCD meeting held on April 20th. His "show and tell" included the Burnham Twin Pusher he built after being prodded by Mik Mikkelson to fly the event. Mik sent him plans and Hank realized he had less than a week to get it built and ready to fly. He wound up winning the Mass Fly-Off event.

Harold Davidson decided to attend this meeting to have the opportunity to talk with Hank about his efforts to build the "Cirrus Cruiser" that Hank designed back in the Forties, and described in Hank's book, "The Fascination of Flight" (currently available through the National Free Flight Society).
