Mowry Field Update - 14 July
On May 24, Mowry Field was closed due to chemical contamination near the railroad tracks approximately 20 years ago. The problem with the site is that Toxaphene was used as an insecticide probably through the 1980s. Although once recommended by the government agriculture agencies, it is now banned and part of site remediation. I do not know the manufacturing methods, but it is a Chlorinated Camphor and has an alternate name of Camphochlor. It is pretty much water insoluble (probably good) and is 65% more dense than water. No problems with humans unless you manufacture, distribute, or apply the chemical.
As of today, we are still actively working with the Mission College district to see if we can regain access to the property. We are looking for other local fields to resume our monthly contest series. If you have any suggestions, please contact Truman Cross.
